Jeffology: A Guitar Chronicle is an odd concept for a tribute album. Throughout his career, Jeff Beck has been celebrated for his highly individual, trailblazing playing. Beck has never been a songwriter; he has always been an interpreter. Consequently, throughout Jeffology you have a fleet of first-rate, flamboyant hard rock/metal guitarists interpreting Beck's interpretations. Occasionally, there is a quote from the original version, but most of the musicians just turn it up to 10 and let 'em rip. That can be thrilling for guitar fanatics, but for average listeners, Jeffology swiftly becomes a bore. Many of the performances miss an important element of Beck's records -- his musicality. He made guitar instrumentals compelling to people who had never picked up a guitar in their life.
