Jazz Wagon Review

by Scott Yanow

Jon Weber, a virtuosic pianist who had spent most of his career playing in hotel lounges in Chicago, was in his 30s when he recorded this debut disc. Other than a guest appearance on one song by harmonica wizard Howard Levy, this is a solo set, and Weber (who looks back toward the stride pianists of the 1920s and '30s while also being influenced a bit by the chord voicings of Bill Evans) revives some old obscurities, also turning "Happy Days Are Here Again" into impressionistic jazz and creating a varied and consistently enjoyable set. This is an impressive beginning to his career.
