What exactly a hit is has always been a relative term. It can refer to chart positioning, naturally, and there was a time when jazz tracks dominated the charts, although by the very end of the 20th century and into the 21st, jazz had been marginalized commercially. A hit can also be any tune or melody that became popular with audiences, or with other musicians, perhaps an even surer way to immortality than a high chart position. There's a little of both in this third volume of a four-volume set to survey the popular hits of modern jazz, including Miles Davis' "A Night in Tunisia," Chick Corea's "Sea Breeze," and Herbie Hancock's "Soul Power," to name just three.
