Born in Indiana in 1891 and classically trained, Cole Porter was drawn to musical theater, achieving success there in the 1920s, and a decade later he was firmly established as one of the most important songwriters for the Broadway musical stage. Unlike many composers of his day, Porter handled both the music and lyrics for his songs, which makes his legacy all the more striking. This 15-song set is part of a Savoy Jazz series aimed at casual listeners rather than aficionados, and features versions of Porter songs by the likes of Judy Garland, Freddy Cole, Red Garland, Kenny Burrell, and others. It makes a nice introduction to one of America's best and most sophisticated popular songwriters.
