AllMusic Review by

This compilation of live and studio tracks lives up to the claim of its title. Kicking off with the inescapably catchy "Red Cross," Parker's hyper-kinetic alto establishes the fierce, ingeniously phrased catalogue of harmonic patterns that he samples from in tracks like "Groovin' High," "Hot House" and "Relaxin' At Camarillo." Add other classic sides such "Ornithology," "Lover Man" and "Ko-Ko" and it becomes evident that GREAT SONGS really is a collection of many of the finest of Parker's own compositions and those by other composers on which he left his indelible mark. Some may be frustrated at the slightly inferior sound quality and the lack of discographical information, but these reservations aside, GREAT SONGS is a dazzling display of superior musicianship (both from Parker and his top-notch sidemen) on 10 of the saxophonist's best tunes.
