I've Got a Song for You/And We Were Lovers Review

by Steve Leggett

A veteran of musicals, revues, and cabarets, Shirley Bassey was born to belt out larger-than-life torch ballads, and while she recorded many studio projects throughout her career, which began in 1959, she was most herself at center stage in front of an audience, where her powerful voice and presence made her the full performer. Still, her studio sets were compelling, as this collection, which combines two of them, 1966's I've Got a Song for You and 1967's And We Were Lovers, on one CD, clearly shows. Bassey's joy, professionalism, and talent shine through on both. Two bonus tracks, "Big Spender" and "Walking Happy," have been added to the set to round it out.
