AllMusic Review by

Britain's second national television network, ITV launched on September 22, 1955. A commercial rival to the state-operated BBC, the independent network's programming slate of fast-paced dramas, ribald sitcoms, and topical documentaries ushered in a new era of broadcasting, birthing such classic series as Coronation Street, The Avengers, and The Prisoner. In celebration of ITV's 50th anniversary comes this two-disc collection assembling 50 of the network's most popular and memorable theme songs. A subsequent (and superior) companion volume, ITV 50: Cult TV Themes, fills in the gaps. Collectors of British sound library recordings and television themes in general will find next to nothing not already included on previous collections, and liner notes are scant, rendering this two-disc set worthwhile almost solely for listeners making their first plunge into the world of TV tunes. But for those select few it's the motherlode, with such classics as the title themes to Crossroads, Emmerdale, and Man About the House (the inspiration behind the jiggly American sitcom Three's Company).
