AllMusic Review by

Natalie Merchant's iTunes Session was recorded in 2009 at the Clubhouse Studio in the Hudson Valley, during the period she was cutting 2010's stellar Leave Your Sleep. There are seven tracks on this download-only offering, which feature only Merchant accompanying herself on acoustic guitar. There are well-known titles from her catalog, including versions of "Break Your Heart," "Golden Boy," "Build a Levee," and "Kind and Generous." In addition, there are delightful covers of Randy Newman's "Political Science," the traditional folk song "Ribbon Bow" (closely associated with Karen Dalton), and a humorous reading of Harold Arlen's and Yip Harburg's "If I Only Had a Brain," from the Wizard of Oz soundtrack. Certainly it's for fans only, but it's nonetheless a delightful way to hear an iconic, private artist in a close, intimate setting.
