AllMusic Review by

Few interpretations of bossa nova are as idiosyncratic or unique as Sadao Watanabe's Ipanema No Musume. While every bit as airy and lyrical as the Brazilian sound demands, Watanabe eschews its familiar melodic contours in favor of some rougher edges. Backed by a support unit including guitarist Sadanori Nakamure, pianist Masabumi Kikuchi, bassist Masanaga Harada, and drummer Masahiko Togashi, Watanabe channels more conventionally earthy jazz influences to forge an alto sound rooted in the physical plane -- when he picks up the flute, the sound is sun-kissed yet no less appealing, balancing the music's darker impulses.
