This is the third featured title from the IC label, and is one of their more unusual ones. Passe Simple is the duo of Noel Kapoudjian and Herve Cohen, who compose mystical tunes filled with gentle melodies drawn from ancient Indian music. Their orchestrated soundscapes stretch the boundaries of synth samples with modern rhythms, flutes, piano and percussion, electronic and otherwise. Voices are also used to lend an international feeling. The accessibility of the album is enhanced by pieces like "Transit," with church-like intro and lingering themes, or "To Elie," with dreamy textures and finely crafted crescendos. Airplay on Musical Starstreams has introduced this duo to wider audiences, a trend that should continue to grow. The music of Passe Simple is rewarding and individual -- it's that simple.
