Throughout this rather dry set of duets (which includes one original and three suites), trombonist Conrad Herwig and pianist Richie Beirach use their knowledge of 20th-century classical music to combine atonal compositions with their improvisational talents. Alhtough one can admire the self-restraint and the musicians' creative use of space, the lack of mood variation results in one's mind wandering. Only a few blasts from Herwig at the beginning of "Opalescent" briefly alter the introspective atmosphere. The net result is a set of advanced background music.
