Instrumental Burt Bacharach Review

by J. Scott McClintock

Instrumental Burt Bacharach is just one in a long line of MIDI-based recordings put out by the people at Fabulous Records. The song choices are elementary -- based on the track listings of greatest-hits packages, no doubt -- and do represent some of the best that Bacharach has to offer. "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?" "The Look of Love," "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head," and many more are here, but not in an organic setting. This is not an actual orchestra by any stretch, but keyboard facsimiles of the trumpets, flutes, harmonicas, and guitars that make up the standard equipment of Bacharach's signature songcrafting style. The keyboard samples are state-of-the-art, but they are just not as warm and inviting as the real deal. Ultimately, Instrumental Burt Bacharach is a fairly impressive exercise in MIDI implementation that is better suited for use in commercial background music applications than it is for serious listening.
