The four musicians who came together as the Connection are all individually talented, and there is plenty of energy and intelligence in their playing on this release. What isn't here is a really distinctive style -- it's very good jazz-rock that is often reminiscent of Pat Metheny, but without any particular individual character. Though several of the compositions are quite good and have intricate musical structures, this album is redeemed by the skill of the players rather than their inspiration. Inside Out is a solid effort and worthwhile listen, but it's an album to like rather than love.
