What's immediately apparent about this release is that it doesn't include the famous song referred to in its title. While that's sneaky, the collection does include many other hits of the Swing Era, all performed with Benny Goodman's signature jaunt. "Goody-Goody" (featuring the firecracker vocals of Helen Ward), "Swingtime in the Rockies," and "Sing, Sing, Sing (With a Swing)" are all evocative, finger-snapping slices of that bygone era, while "You Turned the Tables on Me" and "These Foolish Things Remind Me of You" are pleasant, swaying ballads. As a budget-line collection, In the Mood doesn't offer the extended liner notes or heightened fidelity of a major Goodman retrospective on Columbia or RCA Victor; however, it's perfectly effective as an economical starter for the Goodman neophyte or casual Swing Era fan.
