In Rough Territory Review

by John Bush

After only a few releases on their Reinforced imprint, Dego and Mark Mac released their debut 4 Hero album, an LP that pre-existed the U.K. hardcore movement's transformation into jungle. As such, In Rough Territory is just that: a raw album which fuses energetic rave atmospheres with the emerging complexities of breakbeat drum'n'bass; track titles like "No Sleep Raver," "Can't Strain My Brain," and "May the Wicked Perish in the Fire of Hell" say much about the mood of the album. With its repeated vocal sample serving as the lead-up to the actual nightmare, the early 4 Hero trademark "Mr. Kirk's Nightmare" is by far the best track here. Although most rave/hardcore acts disappeared overnight, 4 Hero began working their sound into what emerged as drum'n'bass.
