In Dreams: Live Review

by William Ruhlmann

This live recording, probably made in the early '80s at a low point in Roy Orbison's career, finds him with what sounds like a small band performing before an enthusiastic audience that cheers and claps in time. The song list includes Orbison's familiar early-‘60s favorites, with the inclusions of the U.K. hits "Too Soon to Know" and "Penny Arcade" from the second half of the ‘60s suggesting that the venue might have been in Great Britain. The presence of the Elvis Presley tribute "Hound Dog Man," first featured on Orbison's 1979 LP Laminar Flow, seems to confirm the early-‘80s recording date. Although this appears to be a legitimate, or at least legal, release, the sound quality is only that of a good bootleg.
