The Joyce label in the 1970s reissued on LPs the complete output of various swing bands. Vol. 8 in their Claude Thornhill series covers a two-month period. There are eight big-band tracks including six Gil Evans arrangements (such as "Sorta Kinda," "Robbins' Nest" and "Donna Lee") and featuring such top players as trumpeter Red Rodney, clarinetist Danny Polo, altoist Lee Konitz and the tenor of Mickey Folus. The final six selections are quite rare, quartet numbers performed by pianist Thornhill (who had a unique style), guitarist Barry Galbraith, bassist Joe Shulman and drummer Bill Exner. Until this music is reissued in full on CD, the hard-to-find Joyce series is worth searching for.
