This double LP has music from Screamin' the Blues and Straight Ahead. In both cases, Oliver Nelson (doubling on alto and tenor) meets up with the remarkable Eric Dolphy (who switches between flute, bass clarinet, and alto). The rhythm section is the same on both dates (pianist Richard Wyands, bassist George Duvivier, and drummer Roy Haynes), while trumpeter Richard Williams also appears on the former session. Any musician would sound like a conservative (or a straight man) next to Dolphy but Nelson fares well, and he contributed all but two of the dozen compositions. The music (except for some of Dolphy's flights) is essentially straight-ahead hard bop.
