The eclectic group If, Bwana (like Peter Gordon's The Love of Life Orchestra) is a floating or catch-all name for differing musicians who may be gathered for specific performance and recording projects. For this CD, composer-performer Al Margolis has employed Detta Andreana and Paul Marotta and Anthony Seafide on pianos, and Danielle Reddick and Paul Richards on various percussion. There are three extended works on this CD: the rhythmic study 3 out of 4 ain't bad, for 3 pianos and tape (in absentia); PR-DR, for 2 manipulated percussionists; and the concluding selection, Tripping India, an audio travelogue, with manipulated percussionists, is a fascinating collage of religious and celebratory music and other sounds recorded in India then assembled and transformed by Margolis.
