I Won't Complain Review

by Steve Leggett

If the tracks on I Won’t Complain, another vocally amazing album from the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi, weren’t all gospel and praise songs, one could easily label this a secular uptown urban soul album. The sound is there, bright enough to give a bouncing and muted soundscape for the singing, which is really what a Blind Boys album is all about anyway. Highlights include the opener, the lovely and effortlessly wise “Get Where You’re Going,” and the almost bluesy late-night soul of the title track, “I Won’t Complain.” It’s technically not soul, it’s gospel, but it only makes a difference when the clock hits midnight, and maybe not even then.
