AllMusic Review by

I Wish the Talkies has Michael Sell performing incredibly minimal, incredibly slow, and rather low-fi compositions for acoustic guitar and vocals -- the album's aesthetics and vocals are reminiscent of Peter Jeffries on a down day, or Red House Painters without any of their dreamier qualities ("Castaway," or the closing piece "Wax Covered Face"). The style and recording both seem to work, for the most part. Certain portions of the album lag, or don't bear enough fruit to make their minimalism seem worthwhile, yet the majority is fairly effective.
