AllMusic Review by

Steve Blackwood, an up-and-coming Los Angeles-based vocalist, performs fresh versions of 11 familiar songs on his debut CD. Accompanied by a top-notch rhythm section (pianist Jane Getz, bassist Darek Oles and drummer Fritz Wise), and assisted on six of the 11 numbers by trumpeter Jeff Kaye, Blackwood uplifts and adds soul and swing to such tunes as "Black Coffee," "Stompin' at the Savoy," "My Baby Just Cares for Me," "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Just In Time." The one fault to the date is the exclusive reliance on warhorses (including "Fever," "All of Me" and "Bye Bye Blackbird"); all of the numbers have been recorded countless times. However, it is interesting to hear how Blackwood handles such potentially clich├ęd material, and his release is easily recommended to listeners who enjoy jazz singing.
