This brief collection assembles tracks Gladys Knight and the Pips recorded for Buddah Records after leaving Motown in the early 1970s. Although there are some gems here, including the elegant "Midnight Train to Georgia" and Knight's husky-voiced version of Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now," some of the gospel verve that marked the group's stay at Motown seems to be strangely muted here. Maybe it was the times, maybe it was the switch in labels, but the music did seem to suffer. Look for a collection that brings together the best from both the Motown and Buddah labels, and let this one ride.
