Bart Millard and his Contemporary Christian band MercyMe scored a crossover hit with the gentle ballad "I Can Only Imagine." The song possessed a quiet veneer, a hopeful message, and a soothing melody, not unlike a lullaby. So, it's not too surprising that the tune would be the starting point for a collection of lullabies. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE: LULLABIES FOR A PEACEFUL REST was co-produced by MercyMe and collects a variety of mostly classic lullabies, many of a Christian bent ("Jesus Loves Me", "Now Thank We All Our God"), along with the aforementioned hit. The pacific recordings are sung softly by many popular voices of the Christian music community, including Millard, in just the somnolent tone needed to rock a crying baby to sleep (and "Rock-a-Bye Baby" is indeed present here). The melodies are backed by light guitars and the occasional flute, but never does any instrument intrude in a manner that might jar the tender ear of an infant. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE builds on one hit and creates a mild-mannered environment to soothe any child into deep slumber.
