AllMusic Review by

Wayne Walker is remembered as a legendary songwriter who penned country and pop hits for everyone from Elvis Presley, Eddie Cochran, Ernest Tubb, Carl Perkins, Johnny Angel, Johnny Burnette, and Ray Price to Bobby Vinton, Patsy Cline, and Andy Williams. He is a longtime member of the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. In his early days, he was also a rockabilly rebel. This monster 33-track collection from Barcelona’s El Toro adds heft to the latter legend by compiling many recorded versions of songs he wrote or co-wrote with those that became hits for others in the '50s. The first 16 cuts on this set are all Walker's and include his second single, the snaky rockabilly boogie “All I Can Do Is Cry” from 1956. For balance, it’s countered by the teen ballad “It’s My Way.” His version of “Bo-Bo Ska Diddle” is perhaps the most definitive, as is his fingerpopping “Just Walkin’ Around,” modeled on Fat Domino's collaborations with Dave Bartholomew and Bobby Charles. The second half of the set is devoted to covers of his songs by others. Check Brenda Lee's swaggering “Rock the Bop,” that leaves nothing to the imagination as to what the song is really about. Price's reading of “I’ve Got a New Heartache” is here -- it went to number two on the country charts -- as are both Red Sovine's and Presley’s versions of “How Do You Think I Feel?” and both versions of “Sweet Love on My Mind” -- the original by Jimmy & Johnny; the other by Burnette & the Rock ‘n’ Roll Trio. But there are some minor classics here, too, such as Shady Wall's “The New Raunchy,” Otto Bash's inferior but better-selling reading of “All I Can Do Is Cry,” Jimmy Lee's “Love Is Hard to Understand,” and the Kitty Wells-Webb Pierce vehicle "Can You Find It in Your Heart?" Any way you slice it this is the definitive -- if incomplete -- retrospective of Walker’s work for now.
