Part of the ongoing Hood Hustlin' mixtape series, Hood Hustlin, Vol. 12 was assembled by Houston rapper/producer Lil' O to showcase his local scene. Sticking mostly to young up-and-comers instead of the stars of the scene ("Mobb Life" rapper Big Mike, formerly of the Geto Boys, is probably the biggest name here), Lil' O nods to the chopped and screwed phenomenon -- a local invention -- on the opening title track, a collaboration with Nino. Local references predominate on a few songs, like the neighborhood shout-out "Trappin'," but for the most part, these songs and skits are fairly ordinary gangsta rap. One bizarre highlight is Nino's "She So Fly," a celebration of one's significant other that's raunchier than one of Blowfly's old X-rated parodies, but still manages to come across as a sincere, enthusiastic love song.
