Dream Theater's Falling Into Infinity was a failed attempt at breakthrough commercial success. In the process they alienated their dedicated fans and were beginning to carry the label of sellouts. Although the band would later return to the formula that made them successful, the record company and the band tried their best to become household names. This CD single features the radio version of "Hollow Years," which was Falling Into Infinity's best chance for radio airplay. The song never did break into the mainstream, which isn't that surprising given the bland nature of the song and the repetitive chorus. Regardless, the band provided their fans with more bonus material, including the previously unreleased "The Way It Used to Be." The Japanese version also contains live version of "Burning My Soul" (with Hell's Kitchen) and "Another Hand/The Killing Hand."
