On this mini-album, KT Tunstall drops all pretensions for roots-rock cred and openly embraces the populism that sent her up the charts a few times over. Released as part of an NBC holiday music series, SOUNDS OF THE SEASON finds the Scottish chanteuse working through six seasonal numbers. The choices are telling, though--the Pretenders' "2000 Miles," the Pogues' "Fairytale of New York," and Bing Crosby's "Mele Kalikimaka (Christmas in Hawaii)" are among the six exclusive cuts--and all suggest, to her credit, a restlessness with this kind of contract filler. She seems to be making the most of it. That said, this is a very enjoyable holiday release for those who like a little adult alternative kick in their eggnog.
