Sigh -- another Motown compilation. This one was issued in conjunction with a Motown photo exhibit mounted by London's Redfern Gallery in the spring of 2005, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Motown Revue's first British visit. To its credit, the disc's 23 songs offer a particularly English perspective on the Sound of Young America, spotlighting a number of songs that failed to catch fire on their native shore. Ardent Motown collectors won't find anything rare or unreleased here, but more casual listeners will discover that the play lists of oldies radio stations fail to acknowledge a number of songs and artists. Highlights (or at least intriguingly eccentric selections) include R. Dean Taylor's "Gotta See Jane," Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "The Onion Song," Marv Johnson's "I'll Pick a Rose for My Rose," and the Four Tops' "I'll Turn to Stone."
