It's hard to get too excited about this brief ten-track sampler of sides from Vanilla Fudge and Iron Butterfly (five songs from each band), two acts that flirted with pretension in the late 1960s while occasionally catching hold of some real fire. Fudge in particular was onto something when they slowed the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On" down to an ominous crawl and the group's muscled up version of Junior Walker's "Shotgun" is definitely a guilty pleasure. Iron Butterfly, of course, struck pay dirt with the irritating but impossible to resist "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" (the single version is included here, which means you won't get the five-minute phased drum solo). Superficially, these two bands would seem to fit together, but aside from a certain ponderous feel, this little sampler feels tossed together to no particular gain.
