This superior LP fills two important gaps in the discography of tenor saxophonist Lester Young. After leaving Count Basie's Orchestra in 1940, Young led a band of his own with trumpeter Shad Collins and guitarist John Collins that, other than for a session backing singer Una Mae Carlisle, never recorded. This LP has broadcast versions of "Tickle Toe" and "Taxi War Dance" by this excellent group, along with "Benny's Bugle" from the otherwise unrecorded unit that Prez co-led with his brother, drummer Lee Young, in 1941 on the West Coast. The remainder of this set features Young during his second (and also otherwise unrecorded) stint with Basie's Orchestra in 1944. Other soloists with Basie include trumpeters Harry "Sweets" Edison and Joe Newman, trombonist Dickie Wells and Basie himself. Recommended.
