David Watson is joined by a few of his friends at the Sonoma, CA, Music in the Vines label for a tribute to Christmas. With a play list of traditional Christmas, some pop tunes celebrating the season, and Watson Christmas originals, Watson does most with a kind of rough-edged voice, but in a very sincere manner appropriate for the time of the year. Helping out is the fine pianist Art Hirahara and bass player Naim Satya, both of whom have appeared together on more than one occasion. They collaborate on the quite soothing Watson original "An Angel Touched My Christmas." Darrel Green has the drums chair when Watson isn't there. Both rein themselves in, providing light touches appropriate for this kind of music. The traditional "Deck the Halls" is jazzed up with Watson ending each line with some scatting, which adds to the joy conveyed by the lyrics. Wrapping Christmas music in a jazz package is always a delicate affair. But the group handles it quite well. This is a nice holiday jazz package and is recommended.
