AllMusic Review by

Focusing on Charlie Christian's prime work with various Benny Goodman-led groups, His Best Recordings: 1939-1941 showcases the young, innovative guitarist at the crucial crossroads between swing and bop. Besides a Minton's jam session number and a side piece with Lionel Hampton's big band and the Metronome All-Stars, Christian is heard finding myriad ways to riff off -- and help inspire -- the chords and lines laid down by Goodman and such cohorts as Cootie Williams, Count Basie, tenor saxophonist George Auld, Hampton, and drummer Nick Fatool. In addition to classics like "Air Mail Special" and "Rose Room," the disc features the legendary guitarist on 20 other stunning cuts of high-end swing.
