AllMusic Review by

For those interested in Benny Carter's early work from the swing era, this Best of Jazz roundup should be seriously considered. Covering the arranger/composer's work with Fletcher Henderson, the Chocolate Dandies, Coleman Hawkins, Teddy Wilson, and various personal outfits, His Best Recordings 1929-1930 provides a dizzying array of amazing originals ("When Lights Are Low," "Cocktails for Two") and stage interpretations ("Honeysuckle Rose," "Stardust"). The lineup is just as impressive, with the likes of Henry "Red" Allen, Ben Webster, Rex Stewart, Stephane Grappelli, Fats Waller, and Cozy Cole lending their seasoned support. Billie Holiday even makes a cameo, topping off a mix not to missed by jazz fans of all persuasions.
