AllMusic Review by

Released in 1994, the Best of Jazz label's 22-track mini-history of the young-to-early-middle-aged Louis Armstrong covers a time line from November 1924 to June 1938, featuring Armstrong as a leader and sampling his work with Clarence Williams' Blue Five, Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra, Bessie Smith, Bertha "Chippie" Hill, and the Mills Brothers. "Georgia Bo Bo" is played by Lil's Hot Shots, which for one day was the Louis Armstrong Hot Five under the nominal leadership of pianist Lil Hardin Armstrong. This collection wraps up with several examples of Armstrong's work from the '30s, a period during which he began a gradual transformation from the world's most influential jazz musician to one of America's best loved popular entertainers.
