Doug Lawrence swings his way through this rollicking collection of R&B/soul-jazz tracks fronting a classic tenor sax/organ combo lineup. Featuring fine work from Adam Scone on the Hammond B-3, High Heel Sneakers harkens back to the early-'60s heyday of Jimmy Smith, Brother Jack McDuff, Jimmy McGriff and Shirley Scott with Stanley Turrentine. Guitarist Peter Bernstein contributes to the period feel, working with Scone to recall the great Smith-Wes Montgomery matchups. With the percussive addition of Eddie Bobe and conga legend Carlos "Patato" Valdes on several of the tracks, Lawrence proves himself a versatile, smooth-but-funky player on this, his second as a leader. And yes...it is that "High Heel Sneakers!"
