AllMusic Review by

Charlie Parker is the hero of High Flying Bird, a 39-track collection of vintage bop recordings released in 2005 on the Pulse label. This anthology is laid out according to the kind of stochastic principles that have come to be regularly applied to music since the invention of the iPod and the MP3. What they've done is to comb through Parker's recorded legacy and pull out choice tidbits which are then laid out in almost completely random fashion. Most of the true bop anthems are here, including "Anthropology," "Ornithology," "Confirmation," "Scrapple from the Apple," "Ko Ko," "Now's the Time," and "A Night in Tunisia." Bird is heard exercising his imagination in the company of Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Trummy Young, Tiny Grimes, Slam Stewart, Red Norvo, Lennie Tristano, Jay McShann, the Metronome All Stars, Woody Herman's Herd and Machito's Afro Cuban Salseros. A good all-purpose sampler of classic bop garnished with ballads, blues, Caribbean rhythms and Kansas City swing.
