This two-disc set examines the bluesier part of the label's output and bookends it with another disc subtitled "the R&B Sessions + The Soul Years." Although Hi's brand of blues was much further away from their Delta roots than other labels', some good down-home results were still produced on artists like Donald Hines, Big Amos Patton, Big Lucky Carter and Joe Lee Carter. Selections from Willie Mitchell, Gene "Bowlegs" Miller and Don Bryant complete the first disc. Disc two collects up the R&B sessions of Mitchell, Miller, Bryant, Norm West, Janet and the Jays, James Fry and the Five Royales, while also collecting up soul sides from Al Green, Syl Johnson, O.V. Wright, Otis Clay, Bobo Mr. Soul, Phillip Mitchell, the Masqueraders, Ann Peebles, Joint Venture and George Jackson. Another great slab of Memphis musical history.
