The second of three LPs to be released from the Red Rodney-Ira Sullivan 1980 appearances at the Village Vanguard features the quintet (trumpeter Rodney, Sullivan on tenor, flute, alto and trumpet, pianist Garry Dial, bassist Paul Berner, and drummer Tom Whaley) playing advanced versions of four standards and complex Jack Walrath originals. It is a particular joy hearing Rodney and Sullivan both on trumpets during "I Remember You" and Thelonious Monk's "Let's Cool One." The modern setting (which still had a jam session feel since the band had only been playing together a week before appearing at the Vanguard) brought out the best in these talented musicians.
