Hero is an unabashed crossover album -- ten songs of perfectly aimed mainstream American pop, from the dance stylings of "I Will Survive" (not the Gloria Gaynor song) to the grandiose adult contemporary ballads of the title track, topped off with three Spanish versions of songs previously heard on the album. There's nothing wrong with a crossover, of course, and Enrique Iglesias seems perfectly suited for mega crossover success -- it's in the family, naturally, but he also has a pleasant voice and is certainly sexy. And there are times that it works very well, particularly on the glitzy, hyper-disco "Don't Turn Off the Lights," but the bulk of the record is just dull -- professionally made, sure, and classy even, but just with out much spark, sexiness, or style. Nothing would sound out of place on the radio and it's enjoyable enough as background music, but it just isn't that interesting or engaging as an album.
