AllMusic Review by

Near the end of his tenure at Motown, Marvin Gaye's career was taking a plummeting nose dive compared to the peaks of such classics as What's Going On, I Want You and Let's Get It On being three of the decade's biggest selling albums for the then-L.A. based label. This two-fer takes his last two recordings for the label and puts them together for a single release. 1978's brutal confessional concept album Here, My Dear essentially narrates the story of his troubled and highly tumultuous marriage to Anna Gordy, and spawned two excellent hits in "A Funky Space Reincarnation" and "When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You?." 1981's In Our Lifetime keeps the confessionals going, exposing the two halves of Gaye in the spotlight: the devout, highly spiritual son of a preacher man and the romantic hedonist who charmed a generation of women out of their stockings.
