Amateurish charm still works. The main Bridesmaid in question is Leah Paul, Brooklyn brass 'n' woodwinds player and vocalist, formerly from Buffalo and Ann Arbor, and also of Eternal Buzz Brand Band. Paul barely fusses over vocals, which sound one-take and ingenuous, like some '80s British twee-poppers or K Records bands. Her music starts equally shambolic on the rough and tumble post-punk clunker "The Death Rattle," but soon shifts to more delicate pop that makes better use of her classical abilities. Her flute and piccolo trumpet especially perk up the 20/20 Beach Boys-like "New Year's Eve," in a way that points to potential. There's too little here over five songs, and she needs to hone a style of sorts, but it's an OK start.
