While naming themselves after a local weatherman connotes a broad sense of humor, HEAVENLY BENDER is serious rock business--classic riffs, playful pianos, get-up-and-boogie rhythms. But it’s also a bit idiosyncratic. While all the parts to a song like “You Can’t Stop” do fit into an obvious mold, together they make for an impatiently alluring three-minute track that sounds alternately jaunty, spacey, and rugged. And that’s ultimately where Sam Champion’s sense of humor comes through--not by way of hokey personalities or aloof lyrics, but via an almost giddy resistance to standing musically in one place.
