Bright, alert, and buoyant, these performances of three of Haydn's London Symphonies by Bruno Weil and Cappella Coloniensis should please any devotee of the great Austrian composer. Weil is an adept Haydn conductor who likes quick tempos, clear textures, brilliant colors, and balances that favor the brass and tympani. Cappella Coloniensis is a period instrument chamber orchestra with sprightly strings, characterful woodwinds, and a powerful brass and tympani combination. Together, they make delightful music of these symphonies -- the 98th in B flat major, the 97th in C major, and the 94th in G major (aka, "The Surprise") -- in readings with more weight and strength than most period instrument performances, but more poise and energy than most modern instrument performances. Ars Produktion's super audio digital sound is remarkably clean, vivid and transparent, with plenty of presence.
