The sophomore release from Portland's the Last of the Juanitas was produced by indie rock impresario Tim Green of the Fucking Champs. In that same vein, the Juanitas' sound is an interesting -- and unusual -- blend of instrumental math rock and metal, with the occasional vocal line thrown in just to add to the chaos. Taking a slight step away from the cleaner Drive Like Jehu sound of their previous record, Hawaii is noisier, artier, punker, and louder. "The Debigulator" is a standout track in this regard, moving from calculated to cacophonous as it gains in volume. A must-have for the fan of instrumental avant-math-metal.
