AllMusic Review by

Much like the indie comedy from which this soundtrack sprang, HAPPY, TEXAS is a delightful mix of veteran and newbie performers whose contributions effortlessly flow together. Among veteran names, standouts include Emmylou Harris, who trills "Ordinary Heart"; Joan Osborne and Randy Scruggs, who offer a soulful duet on the chugging "Passin' Thru," and Flaco Jimenez on the infectious "Baila Este Ritmo." As for newer names, special mention goes to Shannon Brown, with the sassy stomper "Half a Man" and Brad Paisley, with the twangy two-stepper "Me Neither."

There are also a number of goofy inclusions, such as Yma Sumac's wacky "Gopher Mambo" and Robert Earl Keen's loping "That Buckin' Song" (featuring pal Lyle Lovett on vocals). Texas swing also gets the nod thanks to the inspired playing of Lee Roy Parnell and Keb' Mo', who both sound like they're channeling Bob Wills throughout "Are You Happy Baby."
