At the time Hank Williams, Jr. Sings Hank Williams, Sr. -- the soundtrack to the MGM film Your Cheatin' Heart -- was released, it wasn't certain if Hank Jr. would be able to separate himself from his dad. Of course, he was able to become his own artistic entity, making records that surpassed this, but Hank Williams, Jr. Sings Hank Williams, Sr. remains an enjoyable, straightforward collection of sympathetic treatments of such Hank classics as "Your Cheatin' Heart," "I Saw the Light," "Jambalaya," "Cold Cold Heart," "Hey Good Lookin'," "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," and "You Win Again." The original productions were somewhat slick and overproduced, boasting saxophones and electric guitars that may upset purists. For them, this Rhino reissue is ideal, since it contains no less than 12 bonus tracks, including two alternate mixes of "Jambalaya" and "I Saw the Light," and ten acoustic mixes that prove even more than the finished mixes that Hank Jr. was a talented singer and a true heir to his dad's legacy.
