One of three volumes in Time Life's Guitar Rock series (not including the original two-disc set titled simply Guitar Rock), Guitar Rock: High Voltage is devoted to a pretty wide variety of at least fairly hard guitar rock. Even if their styles can be widely dissimilar, it's not unreasonable to think that Cream ("Crossroads"), Steppenwolf ("Magic Carpet Ride"), Nazareth ("Love Hurts"), the Allman Brothers ("Midnight Rider"), the Atlanta Rhythm Section ("So Into You"), and Def Leppard ("Rock of Ages") could probably all find a home on the same album-rock radio station. Even if it isn't a retrospective devoted to a particular era or style, the collection does boast a number of great singles, and taken that way, it's an entertaining listen.
