AllMusic Review by

If People From Earth are more than a little bit reminiscent of the Rheostatics, it's easily forgivable: Two of the members are brothers of Rheostatic Martin Tielli, and most of the album was produced by future Rheo Don Kerr. From most of the material on this album, it's evident that there's a lot of talent in the Tielli family, though it's a bit less focused in the People From Earth camp. The music is well played and suitably eccentric, but the lyrics on this, their debut, are occasionally a bit underdeveloped. Overall, Growing up From the Ground comes off a bit like Rheostatics-lite, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, especially with standout tracks like "Apology" and "Was He Cutting Up a Body?"
