A really great compilation of local D.C. area country groups moving in musical waters as far removed from hat hunk country and the twin spheres of Garth and Shania as you can possibly get. Groups like the Oklahoma Twisters, Ruthie and the Wranglers, the Ornery Brothers, Dallas Dudley and the Atomic Hillbillies, Julia and the Honky Tonk Troubadours and Honky Tonk Confidential may be a few dials off range from mainstream country radio but there's a wealth of great roots honky tonk music from every last one of them. One of the true highlights is the two song turn from Louise Kirchen, who sings a pair of originals in a straightforward way that cuts to the heart of what makes great country with a backup turn from her husband, Tele titan Bill Kirchen. Tracks from the Local Yokels, Fannie Zollicoffer, Alan Veach, Kevin Johnson and the Linemen, Rodeo Motel, David Kitchen and the Demolition, Fannie and Randy with the Throwbacks, Tex Rubinowitz, and the Reluctant Playboys complete this very fine compilation. A musical scene bordering on a way of life, great stuff.
